Story Background

The emperor has perished, the nation is in peril, the whole world has succumbed to chaos. Power struggles were the source of endless disputes among the nobles, amidst the confusion; the imperial jade seal has vanished.

In ten years of turbulence and unrest, the kingdom had been torn asunder. The air thick with the stench of blood and carcass. The spread of violence across the central plains signaled the twilight of the great martial arts clans' dominance. A protracted state of fear set in among the people and the threat of foreign aggression was constant. Japanese invaders collude with the notorious "Dragon Society" to seize power of the central plains: for the martial arts clans of that land, judgment day is imminent.

It is often said that heroes are born in times of chaos. Out of the dark foment of a lawless epoch, a select few will rise to meet the coming adversity. Swords will crash like thunder in foul tempests, awakening the great nations of the world from a bleak somnolence.

Plot Summary

Legend has it that ten years prior, not long after the Emperor's passing, the rumblings of a coup d'état shook the royal court. A period of reckoning was imminent; the prince sensed the very fabric of his deceased father's empire tearing at the seam. Of those vestiges of the Emperor's incontrovertible and supreme authority there remained only one: the Imperial Jade Seal. The prince's every dream and pretension to grandeur, his very life-blood lay vested in that majestic stone working's safe passage, and so, on the eve of revolt, he dispatched his lone confidant into the dark fold of night, the jade seal tucked deep in his robe.

As the world turns, so too do its dominions: with the royal court's marble floors slick with the blood of the heir apparent, and the Imperial Jade Seal lost to the Bandits of Mt. Taihang to be buried in the Dragon Society's manifold interstices, there came a new era of uncertainty, an era in which individuals of uncommon breed would emerge to bring new force to the fallen empire and quest for the sunken Jade Seal.

Cloudsville: Passing by this land prior to his enthronement, the soon-to-be Emperor had witnessed a propitious blooming of clouds, tuft upon tuft, after which time he bestowed upon the village its current name. From that era of promise, the village had, in recent years, been the victim of a prevailing and widespread misfortune: rival clans had taken their violence to the streets and officials groped for some claim to authority in the Jade Seal's absence.

There had never been a greater need for heroes of uncommon mettle as in the years surrounding your birth. Born into a royal lineage, your youth followed the zeitgeist: steeped in martial arts from the time you could kick, you had cultivated an intrepid spirit. When you came of age, the royal court had just summoned all the great heroes of the land to bring peace to the raging foment of a ravaged country. The Cloudsville mayor selected you to join the vanguard.

With a band of elites your sworn brothers, you took swiftly to the Royal Court's given task, uprooting corrupted elements with broad strokes of your sword, making for Wildwolf Valley on a trail of blood. Your selfless work for the common good made no small ripples in the ranks of Cloudville; your name rang out in open air-markets and passed through the lips of those who dared speak of a brighter future. An emissary sent in search of the Jade Seal caught word of your accomplishments and, in a private meeting, appraised you as worthy of the highest path. Leaving behind your old life and setting out for the Imperial City, you would embrace the role of a warrior bent on the king's redemption.

The clamor of injustice could be heard even beyond the city walls and, as you entered, you could feel the veil of ignorance lift: the harsh reality of war-time could be seen plain as day in the agonized expressions of the aggrieved and tormented, the hungry and listless youth and the once abundant streets now windswept and empty mid-morning.
Adding to an already tense atmosphere was the string of child abductions and a case with no apparent leads beyond vague notions of the Dragon Society's involvement.

The Dragon Society: the organization's leader was a former eunuch of the high court banished after his plot for rebellion was uncovered. A pariah, driven to society's fringe, he lay in waiting for the opportune moment, all along assembling a frightful cast of hooligans and outlaws. With an ever more diverse and powerful army, The Dragon Society took to the world's stage, perpetrating acts of evil wherever it went. Sent to spy on the Society's movements, you were astounded to find that they had allied with Japanese forces in a bid for domination of the central plains and that the string of child abductions had been their doing. They had manufactured panic and uproar to breed disunity within the Seven Martial Clans and the ensuing anarchy served as foil to their plots; their operants swept in unnoticed, looting sacred martial arts tomes and precious valuables to sell to the Japanese Mikado.

All outcomes are the products of chance. In the course of investigation into the Dragon Society, the Mt. Taihang Bandits were found to be in cahoots and new leads began to surface in the hunt for the Imperial Jade Seal. The Dragon Society had woven itself into the very fabric of society, the ivy that choked its sylvan host; it held outposts in every town and border, high officials and lowly townsfolk all claiming allegiance to its sneering lord. As the Dragon Society's influence grew, so too did your own powers. Your love of and devotion to the people would drive you to ever greater heights of martial arts mastery, but victory still seemed a long way off. The Dragon Society had gained possession of the Imperial Jade Seal and sold it to the Japanese Mikado in exchange for an endless supply of rations and weaponry: they threatened to dominate outright.

It is common wisdom that a nation too great must become divided; such was the fate of the Dragon Society. At the behest of the Society's southern lord, you and a party of clan conspirators assassinated the Dragon King and won back the Imperial Jade Seal from its captor. With victory in hand, you rode the wave of public adoration all the way to the high throne. At last, you sat perched atop the greatest kingdom under heaven, gazing down on the thriving masses, their former lives restored, able again to appreciate the simple and bittersweet procession of life unto death.
